Set Up Email Alerts
Get an email when a reading crosses a threshold, a Qingping device goes offline, or a battery runs low, and review every alert in the event history.
displayAQI sends alerts by email to addresses you've verified. A rule watches one device or all devices, and sends a second email when the condition clears.
Admins and Editors manage alerts. In a partner-managed workspace, Workspace Managers do.
Rule Types
| Rule type | Sends an email when |
|---|---|
| Air quality | A metric reaches the severity you choose. |
| Device offline | A Qingping device stops reporting. AirGradient monitors don't trigger this rule. |
| Low battery | A device's battery drops below the percentage you set. Mains-powered devices report no battery level, so the rule skips them. |
Each type has its own settings:
- Metric: Any air quality metric (CO₂, PM2.5 and PM10, whichever is worst), CO₂, PM2.5, PM10, Temperature or Humidity.
- Alert when at least: Moderate, Poor or Hazardous. Each option shows its range in the metric's own unit. Temperature offers Moderate and Poor only.
- Alert when battery drops below: 5 to 95%. The default is 20%.
Readings and status colors explains what each severity means.
Add a Recipient
A recipient is any email address. It doesn't need a displayAQI account, but you must verify it before it can receive alerts.
Open Settings and select the Alerts tab.
Under Alert recipients, enter the email address.
Select Send verification.
In the email titled "Verify alert emails for displayAQI", open the link.
On the page that opens, select Verify email.
The address now shows Verified. The link expires after 24 hours. If it does, select Resend verification next to the address.
Every alert email includes a link to stop alert emails. Opening it and selecting Stop alert emails sets the address to Unsubscribed. To send alerts to it again, select Verify to resubscribe. The recipient must verify the address again.
Create a Rule
New alert rule is available once at least one recipient is verified. You can also choose Add, then Alert, in the sidebar.
Select New alert rule.
Under Alert type, select Air quality, Device offline, Low battery, or any combination. Each type becomes its own rule.
Under Device, choose All devices or one device.
Set Metric and Alert when at least, or Alert when battery drops below, for the types you selected.
Under Recipients, select up to 10 verified addresses.
Set Cooldown between emails. The default is 60 minutes and the minimum is 15.
Leave the on/off switch on, then select Create rule.
A rule for All devices also covers devices you add later. Each device alerts and recovers on its own.
A rule with no recipients records events but sends no email. The rules list marks it No recipients. Use Edit to change a rule or Delete to remove it.
Cooldown
After displayAQI sends an email for a rule and a device, the next email for the same pair waits until the cooldown ends. Events inside the cooldown still appear in the event history, marked Suppressed.
displayAQI records a recovery that happens inside the cooldown but doesn't email it.
Event History
Open the Event history tab to see every time a rule fired or recovered. Newest events come first, 25 at a time. Select Load more for older ones.
Filter by:
- Device: search, then choose one, or leave All devices.
- Type: All events, Alerts or Recoveries.
- Dates: Start date and End date, no more than 90 days apart.
The table shows Event (Alert or Recovered), Device, Trigger, When and Delivery. For air quality alerts, Trigger is the metric and its value.
| Delivery | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pending | The email is queued. |
| Sent | The email went to every recipient. |
| Failed | Sending failed after 3 attempts. |
| Suppressed | No email was sent. The rule was in its cooldown, had no verified recipients, was deleted or changed, or the workspace reached its daily limit. |
What an Alert Email Contains
Alert emails are plain text, sent from displayAQI Alerts (alerts@displayaqi.com). The subject names the problem and the device:
- Air quality: "Alert: CO₂ is poor at Room 12"
- Offline: "Alert: Room 12 is offline"
- Low battery: "Alert: Room 12 battery is low"
Recovery emails start with "Recovered:" instead of "Alert:". An air quality alert looks like this:
CO₂ reached poor (1450).
You'll get another email when it returns to normal.
Device: Room 12
Location: Main Building / Floor 1 / Room 12
Time: 2 Aug 2026, 09:00 UTC
Open the device: [link to the device page]
Stop receiving alert emails at any time:
[unsubscribe link]The Location line appears when the device is assigned to a building, floor or room. Times are in UTC.
