When a Device Is Offline or Stale
Learn what Offline, Stale, and the other device statuses mean, where they show, and what to check when a device stops reporting.
A Qingping device is Offline when Qingping reports it disconnected. Any device is Stale when no new reading has arrived for more than 10 minutes.
The dashboard, device page, widgets, and kiosks each show these states.
Device Statuses
| Status | Meaning | How it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Live | A reading arrived within the last 10 minutes | Green dot |
| Stale | No new reading for more than 10 minutes | Yellow dot, and a chip such as Stale · 25m ago on the device page |
| Offline | Qingping reports the device as offline | Red dot, a chip such as Offline · 2h ago, and gray gauges |
| Waiting | The device has no reading yet | Blue dot, with the tooltip Waiting for first reading |
| Checking | The provider is slow or limiting requests, and displayAQI is retrying | Blue dot, with the tooltip Checking for fresh reading |
| Disconnected | The provider rejected the saved keys or token | Red dot and a chip Account disconnected with Reconnect |
| Not found | The device is missing from its provider account | Red dot and a chip Device not found |
The 10 minutes is twice the 5-minute update interval. Hover over a status dot on a card or row to see the status and the time of the last reading.
Where You See Them
- Dashboard: each card and row has a status dot. Needs attention and the Offline filter find affected devices. See Use the dashboard
- Device page: chips for every active condition appear above the metric tiles, with Refresh for workspace admins. The chart shades gaps and labels them Offline
- Buildings page: a device row shows Stale, Offline, Setup issue, or Waiting for data when it isn't live, and Low battery below 20%
- Widgets: a stale reading shows No data in place of a rating, and the time label changes from Updated to Last received
- Kiosks: the time label changes to Last received, and the split layout headline reads Air quality data is out of date
A device that goes offline stops sending readings, so it turns stale after 10 minutes on widgets and kiosks. Those displays have no separate Offline state. During a Qingping outage or a rate limit, they keep treating a reading as current until it is 1 hour old.
AirGradient monitors have no Offline status
A monitor that stops reporting turns Stale. The Offline filter and offline alerts apply to Qingping devices only.
What to Check
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Offline or Stale | Check the monitor's power and Wi-Fi. Open the provider's app (Qingping+ or the AirGradient dashboard) and confirm it shows readings there. Readings return on the next update, about 5 minutes later |
| Stale, with a note that Qingping checked recently | Qingping has no newer reading to give. Qingping+ can show readings before Qingping publishes them to displayAQI. Wait for the monitor's next upload |
| Account disconnected (Qingping) | Select Reconnect, or open Settings, then Credentials, enter the App Key and App Secret, and select Test and save |
| Device not found | Confirm the monitor is still in the Qingping account whose keys displayAQI uses |
| Warming up, Rate limited, or Qingping unavailable | No action needed. displayAQI retries automatically |
| Battery N% · Recharge | Charge or plug in the monitor. The chip appears below 20% |
Workspace admins can select Refresh on the device page to ask the provider for the latest reading. It fetches only what the provider has published. See View a device's history.
